How the Xbox 360 Warranty Works

Print
Xbox 360

When buying a new Xbox 360 console, you will receive a 1 year Express warranty, along with a 3 year warranty covering the Three Lights Flashing Red, or better known as Red Ring of Death (RROD). Both warranties will kick off from the day of purchase. Any Xbox 360 accessories included with the console or bought separately are also covered by a separate 90 day warranty.

Below is a description of each warranty and how they work:

  • 1 Year Express Warranty
    • Covers all faults on the console during the 1 year period.
  • 3 Year Three Lights Flashing Red / E74 Warranty
    • The 3 year extended warranty covers only the Three Lights Flashing Red problem, aka Red Ring of Death (RROD), and the software fault, E74. This occurs when your Xbox 360 cannot boot and displays 3 red lights - normally green - or it displays a failure message, with the heading E74. It starts at the same time as the 1 Year Express warranty, so in essence you receive 2 years extra cover.
  • 90 Day Accessories Warranty
    • New Xbox 360 accessories either bought separately or included in a console bundle receive a 90 day warranty. This covers headsets, controllers, hard drives, power supply bricks and cables.

In each case, you can use our replacement guide which details the Microsoft Xbox 360 repair procedure within South Africa.

Once you have your replacement console, you should take note that the warranty does not reset. However, in most cases, it does receive a short extension, depending on where you are in the warranty period:

  • Post-service Warranty - How it Works
    • Console repaired WITHIN the original warranty period - You will receive either the balance of your original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer. Shipping of the console will be covered both ways.
    • Console repaired AFTER the original warranty has expired - You will be responsible for the repair costs (currently R680 if you do your own pick up/drop off at Powercare in JHB, or R930 which includes courier pick up/drop off). On return, you will receive a new 1 year warranty.

Hi can you please help, I sent my xbox in for 3 flashing light error, to Checkers Klerksdorp 0184641411 ref no 136234, they tellme the unit is 12 days out of warranty, i thought xbox has an extended 3 yr warranty for exactly this error. Pls let me know what to do.

Denouncer's avatar Denouncer on July 15th, 2009 08:40:07

It's likely the person you spoke to at Checkers only saw the standard 1 year warranty and assumed this is the only cover.

You should rather submit your claim directly to Powercare who oversee the Xbox 360 warranty claims in SA.

Guys i have a Question: I was told that the DVD drives are coded to the motherboard and you cant just swap out the DVD rom... Who' Stupid idea was this??? as the GPU heat sink sit right under the DVD rom and when the Heat sink heats up So does the DVD Drive and his causes the Drives to fail... So we have to get our DVD drive ID and Spoof it over to the Replacement drive Mmm... what Effort does anyone know can do this? or where to get new DVD drives from? i mean for less than what the console costs. Thanks Guys

I'd recommend contacting Powercare on xbox360support@powercare.co.za and ask whether this would be covered to be sure, but from I've seen in the past, it hasn't been a problem. You'll still need proof of purchase though, even though it's in another country.
james yap's avatar james yap on March 13th, 2010 17:59:58

how if you don't have already the proof of purchase?is it still be honored by the microsoft center?

reply

Steven's avatar Steven on March 13th, 2010 18:38:23

If you don't have any proof of purchase, be it an invoice or even a credit card statement, you'll probably have to pay for an out of warranty replacement.

What should I do if I get a disk unreadable, with every single disk? Does that fall under any of the warranties or can I send it in to be repaires?*

reply

Steven's avatar Steven on July 7th, 2010 15:01:13

It will fall under the 1 year express warranty. You'll need to go through the replacement/repair procedure: http://www.xboxgaming.co.za/guides/hardware/xbox-360-replacement-procedure/

hi i sent a warentee form to powercare i just wana know who and what is powercare and mi digital and What courier company will come to swap my xbox ? OH and what do they do with the old xbox we give them ?

reply

Steven's avatar Steven on July 29th, 2010 17:30:04

Well, Mi Digital used to be the official Xbox 360 agent for repairs in SA, but that's now changed to Powercare. They'll send a courier (I think it's just a 3rd party) who will come collect your old Xbox and at the same time give you your replacement. They'll then (presumably) send the old Xbox back to somewhere like the UK to be repaired.

Sounds like you'll have to pay for an out of warranty repair. Your best bet is to phone Powercare and double check.

Hey everyone. recently my xbox started not connected or showing picture on the tv. I usually use the HDMI slots. the last thing that happened was the game i was playing went fuzzy. so i restarted the console and no picture. I put the console on another HD TV and still no picture. i tried AV AND Component settings, with still no picture, although i heard the audio on those 2 settings. Do you think the graphics card has died?

Hi,

I am just looking for some information; my Xbox 360 is starting to get a bit noisy when running DVD or Games, noisy as if it gets quite loud. The noise goes away at times and I was just wondering if I had to send the unit in and get a replacement is it a new consol or a refurbished one because my consol is only 6 months old.

reply

Steven's avatar Steven on March 15th, 2011 23:07:26

Not sure if Powercare will replace a unit if that DVD drive works but is just noisy. But you can phone them and find out:

Powercare's numbers are: 0861 XB0X-360 (0861 926-9360) or 011 997-5000
