Xbox 360 Replacement Procedure

Print
Xbox 360 Pro

This guide covers the steps needed for replacing a faulty Xbox 360 in South Africa. If you like, you can skip straight to the 3 steps further down, otherwise, continue reading to find out how the Xbox 360 warranty actually works.

When buying an Xbox 360 you have 2 warranty types. The first is a 1 year all purpose warranty which covers all faults on the machine (excludes accessories like power supply, controller, cables, etc.). Some of the common faults include:

  • Graphic Card Failure: Loses video output (NB: Don't confuse 4 Red Lights in a Ring. This means the AV cable is not inserted properly or faulty).
  • Constant in game crashes: This is normally caused by overheating and tends to lead up to the 3 Red Lights.
  • DVD-Rom Failure: Games don't read and constant spinning. (Check your disc for scratches as it might not be hardware related)

The 2nd warranty type spans 3 Years and covers the 3 Flashing Red Lights, or more commonly known as the RROD (Red Ring of Death), and the E74 error. This indicates a general hardware failure, with the only solution being to send it in for repairs/replacement.

For a more conclusive overview of the Xbox 360 warranty, check out this guide: How the Xbox 360 Warranty Works

If you feel your Xbox 360 hardware is faulty, here are the steps to have your unit repaired or replaced:

  • Step 1: Phone Microsoft Xbox Technical Help on: 0800 991-550 from 10am - 6pm, Monday - Friday. They will troubleshoot your problem and if they feel a solution cannot be found, they will supply you with a reference number. They will also ask to register your console, so look up your serial number before phoning in.
  • Step 2: Powercare looks after all Xbox warranty claims in South Africa, and will deal with your replacement. You have a few ways of completing the replacement procedure, and in all cases you should have your issued reference number from step 1, along with your console's serial number at hand:
    • Complete the online claims form
    • Contact them by phone on 0861 XB0X-360 / 0861 926-9360 or 011 997-5000
    • Or, Download the Warranty Procedure Claim Form and either email it to xbox360support@powercare.co.za
    • Or Fax it to:
      • 086 629-8599
      • 086 686-9058
      • 086 523-3300
      • 086 682-3488
      • 086 553-7406
      • 086 562-2078
      • 086 579-2212
      • 086 579-2213
      • 086 579-2215
      • 086 579-2214
  • Step 3: When stock becomes available, a courier will deliver the replacement Xbox 360 unit directly to you. Only the actual console will be replaced, so remove your hard drive and any other peripherals, including cables. (If you're lucky, you may receive a Jasper unit as replacement, therefore, you should receive a new power adapter as well)

If stock is available, you should be issued with a new console fairly quickly, however, turn-around times can be as much as 1 month when there's a shortfall.

I could be blind but where do I register my X360 on this site http://www.xbox.com/en-ZA/

Called Microsoft, got a reference number and he told me to register on the site for SA, but I don't know where I'm supposed to register. Btw the 20 digit product id, the first 8 are your "Unit model Number" and the last 12 are your Serial Number, correct?

You can register your console via the support page: Register a console.

I am waiting for 2 months now, everytime you phone them, they are waiting for stock. This is poor service!!! How do you explain that to a 9 year old boy. This product is expensive, we pay a lot for the product, you should think you will get the service you pay for!!!!

Hi Majka

I totally agree with you, its alot of hard earned cash so one would expect great service...but then again we all know how business works and at the end of the day we dnt always get what we pay for. Im really sorry to hear about this.

I myself had a problem with my xbox 3 weeks ago..and i have had friends who sent their request sometime last year and they are still waiting. But for some reason i must have gotten lucky , i received my brand new xbox within 10 days of handing in my warranty form etc etc.

I do feel for anyone thats waiting coz after hearing the sad news from my friends who are still waiting, i really consider myself lucky as i was expecting to follow this long waiting list as well.

and i only made one call to mi digital the rest of the time i liased via email. All the best and i sincerely hope that you receive your replacement soon. Have a great weekend.

Kind regards
Digital demon.....

It does seem to be luck of the dice. Merkaba, a member of the XG team, had his 2006 model RROD on him, but he was able to replace his console within 2 weeks.

How they serve newer customers before cases such as yours, I'm not sure. Perhaps you have an elite or similar where the unit is harder to obtain?

You can only keep on bugging them, and ask why you've had to wait so long, while others have had their consoles replaced within a reasonable period of time.

I hope you come right!

My son has now been waiting for a month and a half.
This no-stock story is a poor excuse, how can they wait so long for stock? Surely they know what the demand levels are ? No, I think it is because MI Digital think they are only dealing with kids. Well, next step is to go to Hellopeter.com and join the others, at least I will get the satisfaction of seeing a Microsoft resonse.

I have been trying to get hold of MI Digital since Wednesday. EVERY number I have been given for them just rings. Are they still in business? I've spoken to Microsoft SA directly and even the direct number for one of the people there only rings.

MI Digital: No-one answers the phone, no-one is responding to e-mails, the web submission form is BROKEN, and I have no faith in using the fax number and getting a response. And has anyone else noticed that their phone number has 11 digits instead of 10???

WTF...

This is ridiculous. I started "procedures" on the 19th om May. I eventually, after letting it ring for 15 minutes, spoke to someone at MID just to be told that they are moving offices and that they might keep the number or might not. Left a message and nothing yet. I've emailed all the addresses, faxed all the fax number and nothing. This is something that can influence sales.

Sent my xbox to midigital / powercare for replacement under warranty on June 29th, 2009 caused by 3RROD, and still waiting.. Keep getting the same excuse of unit is still at customs.. Come on! This is pathetic! People in the US get compensation goodies if it takes longer than 4 days.. Here I'm waiting 5 weeks! Is there any other way to resolve this.. My warranty has expired since this waiting period.. Not happy either that MS in SA is not addressing this.. Now where do I go?

Don’t know why any body would want to buy an Xbox if you considering buying one take my advice don’t, also had the three light problem, waited for four months for a replacement. and the just say sorry. That is what you call excellent service delivery. They could at least offer me something. Hope MS SA reads this because your suppliers are dragging your name thru the mud.

reply

Denouncer's avatar Denouncer on August 16th, 2009 14:39:07

You might as well send your form off. Even if stock has just arrived, you might not get because there's older warranty claims to fulfill first.

Also, you don't actually send you Xbox in until it gets replaced. They'll send your replacement Xbox with a courier who'll give you your new unit, and take your old one at the same time.

I'm not sure if this would fall under the replacement procedure - your household insurance should cover it though. But you can try phoning Powercare and see what they say.

Well, you won't find it in a store, as it's not sold at retail (at least, that I'm aware of). So I'd advise trying to a local marketplace like bidorbuy, or contacting Powercare and see what they can suggest.
demOZZracy's avatar demOZZracy on January 19th, 2011 12:43:42

Hi, you state that power supplies are under 1 year warranty right?

My power supply is making one helluva noise, sounds like a disk being scratched in the dvdrom (but iis definitely the power supply).

I tried to get a replacement, but powercare told me there is no warranty on the power supply?

I bought my xbox on 17/10/2010, so it's still fairly new.

Any advice/comments?

Thanks

reply

Steven's avatar Steven on January 19th, 2011 13:16:08

The power supply should fall under the 90-day accessory cover. You can read up on the warranty here:

http://www.xboxgaming.co.za/guides/hardware/how-the-xbox-360-warranty-works/

The 1-year warranty only covers the console itself. The failing power supply issue stated above is to do with the console's internal supply. I've removed it to avoid confusion, as this only happened with older consoles.
demOZZracy's avatar demOZZracy on January 19th, 2011 14:09:00

Ok but even with the 90 day accessory cover they still won't replace. :/

Sorry but i am going to write this in Afrikaans -because i am MAD..............

HELP ASSEBLIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Pietie's avatar Pietie on March 11th, 2011 11:13:10

Violanda:

Dis baie weird.

Sterkte!
