Skate 2
Featuring in my most anticipated games of 2009, Skate 2 is one of the first big hitters in 2009. The original Skate, released back in 2007, received much admiration from both critics and fans alike, taking the crown of skateboarding simulations from the Tony Hawk franchise. It wasn't perfect though, but Skate 2 looks to fix that. ...

The What's Coming Up This Week articles saw a break over the last few weeks as everything settled down after the copious amounts of new releases at the end of 2008. If this is your first time reading a What's Coming Up This Week article let me explain. Each week I take a look at the upcoming Xbox 360 games expected to be released in South Africa. I give my impressions based on a mixture of hype, hands-on and any early reviews. It's certainly not conclusive, but a helpful guide of what to expect - especially for those wondering whether to pre-order. ...

Rise of the Argonauts
Rise of the Argonauts is an Action/RPG which follows the greek mythology about Jason, the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. Playing as Jason - and with the help of other Greek heroes such as Hercules, Pan, Achillies and Atalanta - you're on a journey to retrieve the Golden Fleece and resurrect your wife who fell prey to an assassination attack. The gameplay focuses more on the action side rather than RPG, but not so much as games such as Fable 2. The leveling up system is worked in a new light, and new skills and abilities are aquired by hailing your deeds (experience points) to one of four gods: Ares, Hermes, Athena and Apollo. Pleasing one god though, can result in other gods expressing aversion towards you and your followers. ...

Prince of Persia (2008) Fans have expressed mixed feelings on Prince of Persia's new direction, specifically with the hand-drawn graphics. Although the change in visuals is a rather drastic one (same engine as Assassin's Creed), reviewers so far have celebrated this year's Prince of Persia as a return to form for the franchise. Citing amazing visuals, a great combat system, along with enjoyable puzzle solving and of cause incredible feats of skill, agility, and balance - the essence of Prince of Persia ...

Tomb Raider: Underworld Lara Croft is back to solve puzzles and add more animals to the endangered species list. I've been looking forward to this, and although I'm not a hardcore fan per say, it's difficult not to reminisce over the original games released 12 years ago. The general opinion is that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos have brought back the original Tomb Raider in all it's glory. And I mean literally. The great graphics and clever puzzles can still be found, but so can the annoying camera which plagued the original game. In both cases it's not extreme like in titles such as Too Human, but can be frustrating at times. Gun fights once again take a back seat, so those expecting a third-person shooter may be disappointed ...

Left 4 Dead Well, not much to say about this game. It's pretty straight forward. You and 3 friends (either AI controlled or buddies over Xbox Live/Lan) must survive against waves of "infected", or more commonly known as zombies. And that's it. No genre pushing development or amazing storyline, it's a straight arcade zombie shoot'em up. I've spent a good amount of time in the demo, and what I can take away from it, is that the game looks polished and it plays well. If you're a zombie fan, and most importantly you have some friends to join up, then it should be a good blast mowing down hundreds of zombies together ...

Call of Duty: World At War Taking the Call of Duty franchise back into World War 2 - focusing on the pacific side of the war - World at War looks to create a grittier experience compared to the previous titles. Treyarch, who were the developers on Call of Duty 3, take over the reins after the hugely successfull Call of Duty 4: Moden Warfare by Infinity Ward. From our impressions of the beta (Part 1, Part 2), Treyarch has done a better job over their last Call of Duty title, however, it may lack the depth on the multiplayer side to win over the hardcore COD4 players. Needless to say, the co-op and zombie horde-type mode should be great fun and shouldn't be missed by veteran Call of Duty players and new comers alike ...

I've decided to change the way I cover South African releases in this section, and instead of taking a look at each title as it's released, I'm going to do a roundup of what the upcoming week holds in the way of new Xbox 360 titles. The big AAA titles for the holiday season continue this week with the massively anticipated Gears of War 2 and the innovative Tom Clancy's Endwar ...

At a time when all the blockbusters of the games industry are about to come out, it's a rather hostile world for the rest. Straight off the bat, a game will be put side-by-side with one of the upcoming blockbusters, and if it doesn't compete, the carving knives are pulled out. This seems the case with Fracture. Running with a rather unique form of shooter, you play as Jet Brody who has the ability to reshape the battlefield using terrain deformation. Set in a 'plausible future' where nature has turned up side down, splitting the US into two halves in the "Great Flood". The two sides eventually go at it, with the opposing side using genetic augmentations and your side using cybernetics enhancements. ...
