Playdead's stunning black and white puzzle platformer Limbo kicked off Xbox LIVE's Summer of Arcade promotion with a bang last month, receiving world wide critical acclaim thanks to its gorgeous art direction, unique puzzles and powerful atmosphere. Our resident staff member Henry Dowling summed it up perfectly when he tweeted, "Anyone still claiming that games and art are mutually exclusive has not played Limbo." And I couldn't agree more.
Thanks to XG's recent acceptance into the Xbox Community Network we've got our hands on a few interesting facts about the developer and their recent XBLA title which we've compiled into the list below for your viewing pleasure:
- Playdead is an independent developer based in Copenhagen (Pilestraede district) in Denmark, which is home to many other game developers including Kane & Lynch dev IO Interactive.
- Limbo took 3 and a half years to complete, but was originally conceived 6 years ago.
- During the R&D period, around 70% of the game's content was trashed as it "wasn't tight enough or didn't fit in the context".
- Playdead is made up of 8 people – there have been more in the past, but even at its biggest, there were only 16 people.
- 26% of the game's code went into making the boy – it took 3,200 hours to program him.
- In numbers, the boy is 1.5 meters tall, weighs 50kg, and is made up of 13 different sprites.
- The fastest the boy can run is 3 meters per second, and any drop bigger than 10.3 meters will kill him.
- End to end, Limbo is 4.1km long.
- The in-house record for completing Limbo is 2 hours 26 minutes.
- Limbo's audio was recorded on an eclectic mix of obsolete equipment – the weirdest of which involved playing a guiro with castanets (instead of a stick), then running the result through a talkbox. (Don't worry, we didn't get it either)
If for some reason you still haven't played Limbo, then there's still time to redeem yourself!
