Microsoft has announced that the heavyweight 250GB HDD, the one which so far has only been available coupled with the Super Elite, will be released as a standalone in Japan this March, according to a report by Joystiq.
The 250GB standalone Xbox 360 hard drive is expected to retail for around ¥15,540 (or R1,300), which is only slightly more than the current 120GB HDD.
Hoping to see something similar locally, XG contacted the PR people responsible for handling Microsoft affairs in South Africa, but just as the case has been in other territories so far, they could neither confirm or deny the possibility of a South African release.
Microsoft has pushed digital downloads as a way for the Xbox 360 to move forward without the addition of a blu-ray drive, but so far they've made upgrade options difficult and expensive. Hopefully the standalone 250GB hard drive will soon become common place, leading to a price drop on what has always been one of the most over priced standalone components of the Xbox 360.
