Okay, Activision, we get it: Call of Duty games sell like hot cakes and all the execs have swimming pools filled with money. Well, that's what we expect to find after hearing that Call of Duty: Black Ops has exceeded $1 billion in worldwide sales, according to Activision's internal data.
"In all of entertainment, only Call of Duty and "Avatar" have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, as he presumably did backstroke in his Olympic sized swimming pool full of cash. "This is a tribute to the global appeal of the Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise. Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records."
In addition to boasting about all the money they've earned, Activision revealed that the average Xbox 360 player logged on more than once a day, playing at least one hour at a time, adding up to a total of 600 million hours logged with over half of that in online multiplayer.
Call of Duty: Black Ops players can look forward to more content to spend their time and money on early next year, with the premium First Strike map pack heading to Xbox LIVE as a timed exclusive in February 2011.
