The Guitar Hero series, once the darling of the rhythm gaming genre, was abruptly yanked off the stage earlier this year when publisher Activision announced that the franchise had been officially canned. However, it seems that you can't keep a good rocker down, with Activision's Bobby Kotick revealing that the Guitar Hero name isn't dead, it's just going back to the drawing board to be "reinvented".
In an interview with Forbes, the Activision CEO explained that there is a new studio working with the Guitar Hero franchise who are currently exploring "technology pathways" and working on a number of prototypes to see which direction this reinvention will take.
"We said you know what, we need to regain our audience interest, and we really need to deliver inspired innovation," said Kotick. "So we’re going to take the products out of the market, and we’re not going to tell anybody what we’re doing for awhile, but we’re going to stop selling Guitar Hero altogether. And then we’re going to go back to the studios and we’re going to use new studios and reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that’s what we’re doing with it now."
It seems make-believe rock 'n' roll never really dies, it just gets cancelled, and then revived at a later date. The question is: will it work, and what would Activision need to do to achieve their goal? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
