EA wants you to be able to play any position on the pitch this year, and so has announced the Be A Goalkeeper feature for FIFA 11. As the name suggests, the Be A Goalkeeper option allows players to take control of the goalie for the first time in FIFA 11, and will be available in Career Mode, Virtual Pro 2.0 mode, and even online, allowing for full 22-player human controlled matches.

“The phenomenal growth of online gaming and the desire of our fans to be able to play as the goalie was the driving force behind this innovation for FIFA 11,” said Kaz Makita, Executive Producer for EA Sports FIFA. “Friends can play alongside each other in their pro clubs with all 11 virtual players on the pitch human controlled. We have finally replicated football in the virtual world.”

To make sure gamers look the part of a professional goalie there will be varying degrees of AI assistance - assisted, semi-assisted and fully manual. Of course, the main worry is just how much fun it will be sitting around as a goal keeper during a slow, and evenly matched game.

FIFA 11 is expected to launch locally on 1 October.
