2K Games has announced the first single-player expansion for BioShock 2, with the Protector Trials DLC set for release on 3 August.

Protector Trials is a sort of horde mode which puts the gamer back in the over-sized boots of the Big Daddy as he uses all the tricks in the BioShock playbook to protect his Little Sister from hordes of Splicers - similar to the scenarios seen in the original BioShock 2 campaign. The DLC will include six new maps, with three difficulty levels, "each based on favorite locales from BioShock 2". Ok, perhaps not brand new maps then. There will also be new unlockables, such as concept art and videos, as well as 7 new Achievements for those who find that kind of thing important (ie. all of us).

Xbox LIVE members will be able to get down to the business on 3 August for 400 Rapture Dollars MSP, with even more single-player content planned for the future.
