Update: It's official. Full details over here!
Borderlands 2 is currently under development at Gearbox Software, with a release date scheduled for sometime in 2012, according to a source over at Eurogamer.
A follow up to the excellent open world first person shooter has been rumoured for sometime now, and with the original selling over 4 million copies, it's always been more a matter of 'when' than 'if'.
"I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox LOVES Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it's gotten from our customers," said Gearbox head Randy Pitchford in an interview with Eurogamer earlier this year. "Plans and efforts towards the future always exist with a forward looking studio like Gearbox, of course, but brainstorming and blue sky research and development should never be allowed to be construed into a customer promise."
If the source is to be believed, that "brainstorming and blue sky research and development" has finally come to an end, with an official announcement coming "soon" - perhaps as soon as Gamescom later this month. Holding thumbs!
