Homefront may not have been a major critical success, but it obviously did well enough, as publisher THQ has revealed that Crytek UK will be taking over development duties from the now defunct Kaos Studios for the next game in the Homefront franchise, set for release sometime during the publisher's 2014 financial year (April 2013 - March 2014).
"With Crytek's industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we're supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand," said THQ boss Danny Bilson in a Eurogamer report.
Crytek UK, originally formed as Free Radical Design until being acquired by Crytek in 2009, most recently handled the development of the multiplayer component of Crysis 2, having previously been behind the successful TimeSplitters series.
"We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ," said Cevat Yerli, Crytek CEO. "We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It's really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way."
With a release window so far into the future, one has to wonder whether Homefront 2 is being considered for current hardware. Regardless, Crytek UK will have their work cut out for them to breathe new life into the Homefront brand, since the flawed but fun original failed to capitalize on its potential earlier this year.
