The gang over at Double Fine Productions has revealed their latest Xbox LIVE Arcade project at this year's GDC: a 'tower defense shooter' called Trenched.

Trenched sees players taking on the role of the Mobile Trench Brigade as they protect humanity from the evil Monovision - who also happen to be aliens - using a combination of "mobile firepower and stationary defenses" - which really means you get to control a bunch of awesome looking mech-like robots and shoot stuff.

Customization seems to be the order of the day, with "thousands of possible loadouts", and while not confirmed, it looks like there will be large scale multiplayer, with players said to be able to "march side by side with allies from around the world as you fight your way through Europe, Africa, and the Pacific."

While we wait to hear more, check out the first screenshots and announcement trailer, which Tim Schafer described to Joystiq as a "extremely, extremely manly" trailer. So, it's gotta be pretty good, right? Right.
