EA announces 'Online Pass' for EA Sports titles

In what comes across as a thinly veiled plan to curb-stomp the used game market, EA has announced that starting with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 gamers will need a once-off game-specific Online Pass to access any and all online features of future EA Sports titles.

Without the code, gamers will not be able to download additional content or make use of the title's multiplayer features.

“This is an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA Sports online community,” said Peter Moore, President of EA Sports.

In essence, if you buy any future EA Sports title second hand, you'll have to buy an additional Online Pass for $10 (R80) to access the online features.

EA says that there will be a 7-day trial period if you wish to give the Online Pass a try, and international pricing will be revealed in the near future.

If you're a sport game fan you'll end up buying each annual iteration on release anyway and get the pass for free so its more than likely a moot point for most of the market.
