We loved Fable II with its endearing characters and enchanting setting, and along with the rest of the gaming world we have been waiting in anticipation to see how the story would evolve for this, the third installment in the acclaimed series. Expectations were high for Lionheads latest project, and for the most part critics seem happy with the results, even if it's not quite as awe-inspiring as we may have hoped. Let's take a look at a few of the results that have popped up since the review embargo lifted this morning:
- 1Up: "...Fable 3 is even simpler than its predecessor while remaining utterly and distinctly charming when compared to the rest of the 360's library -- it just isn't quite as magical as Fable 2." - B+
- CVG: "It's entertaining, thoughtful and crucially, not entirely for RPG lovers - which could lead to the series capturing an entirely new audience of adventurers." - 9.2/10
- Eurogamer: "Many more RPGs will follow between now and whatever Lionhead does next with the series, but few if any will possess half as much heart, and most importantly, whatever else they have to offer, none will have Albion." - 8/10
- Giant Bomb: "The colorful, sprawling lands to explore, the great flexibility in how you develop your character and make your way through the world, the wonderfully dry sense of humor, and the cockeyed view of fantasy tradition are all here and accounted for." - 3/5
- IGN: "This is a massive game, and yet it remains accessible to gamers of all skill levels. That in itself is a pretty special achievement. Tack on a solid combat system, an immersive world, and decisions with real consequences, and you’ve got a game that just about anybody can enjoy." - 8.5/10
- Metacritic: 80/100
Let's be honest, those who loved Fable 2 will buy this one regardless of what anyone says about it, but it also looks like there may still be enough here to bring new fans to the series as well. Fable 3 will be available locally this Friday, 29 October.
