Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, announced today that the company has identified a rogue squad of Gears of War 2 players who've been cheating the system to unlock Achievements. While this sort of nonsense is in direct violation of the Xbox Live terms of use, Microsoft doesn't ban players caught finagling the system - instead, the offending Gamertag is permanently flagged as a cheater, and their Gamerscore is reset to zero. Although the user is able to gain new Achievements from this point forward, any previously awarded Achievements remain permanently locked.
Nobody will ever know you invested six long months in Guitar Hero III's Inhuman achievement. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.
