Rockstar said that L.A. Noire is going to be different, but I don’t think anyone was prepared for how different. Blurring the lines between game and CG movie with its MotionScan technology and going as far as testing you base instincts, things could have very easily gone pear-shaped, but as the early reviews start rolling in, it seems that once again Rockstar has a winner on its hands.
Joystiq: “This is a little glimpse of an explored territory in interactive media, a hint at an incredibly exciting future that I can only hope we're hurtling towards.” - 4.5/5
IGN: “L.A. Noire may not reach the emotional heights of a game like Heavy Rain, but it’s something everyone must try out. It reaches high and almost succeeds as a brilliant new type of video game narrative.” - 8.5/10
1UP: “L.A. Noire is almost everything I hoped it would be, and very little of what I thought it was.” - A
Gameinformer: “It’s a game unlike anything else I’ve played, one that uses Rockstar’s familiar open-world template as a jumping off point to deliver a deliberately paced adventure game that stresses conversation over gunplay.” - 8.75/10
Giant Bomb: “L.A. Noire is a bold release, because it defies the expectations not just for the type of game Rockstar usually releases, but also for the type of game that receives this degree of care and proficiency in its execution.” - 100/100
Metacritic: 92/100
If these reviews are anything to go by L.A. Noire is turning out to be a must own title for this year. Look out for Rockstar's latest to hit stores locally on 20 May.
