Valve has finally detailed the first downloadable content pack for Left 4 Dead, the L4D Survival Pack DLC. Expected this winter, the DLC pack unlocks a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, as well as 2 complete campaigns for Versus Mode.
During the same period, Valve will also be introducing a newly revised retail offering with the Left 4 Dead Critic's Choice Edition, which includes Left 4 Dead and the new DLC. If you haven't yet picked up this outstanding multiplayer game, then start saving now.
The disappointing news for Xbox owners is that we won't be able to utilise the free Software Development Kit being released for the PC. The SDK gives aspiring developers the tools to create custom campaigns for L4D.
Something a little worrying, and likely to upset L4D fans, is that the press release doesn't at any point refer to the campaigns as "new", and it is clear that the campaigns are for Versus mode only - and not the normal co-op. What this tells me is that the DLC won't be adding new campaigns, but rather enabling the Dead Air & Death Toll maps which were left out of the Versus mode for whatever reason.
Like many others, I feel those maps should've been enabled in the original release (PC users have found a way to enable them through commands. So it's all there). But we'll have to just wait and see before we get out our pitchforks and torches.
[UPDATE] Put away those pitchforks people, the Left 4 Dead DLC is going to be absolutely FREE!
