During the recent Gamelab Conference in Barcelona, Lionhead's Peter Molyneux talked about their upcoming Kinect-based Fable game, Fable: The Journey, and how it isn't going to be your average flail your arms and legs around like a mad man Kinect game. At least, not if you don't want it to be, because the "definitely not on rails!" game will also be playable sitting down.
"Some people in the audience will be thinking, I don't want to use Kinect. I don't want to jump around all over the place - I want to sit down. That's only thinking of the negatives. Think about the positives about Kinect. The wonderful, amazing thing about Kinect is that it can see you," explained Molyneux. "The most amazing thing about The Journey is that you can play it sitting down. If I'm going to tell the most emotional story in the Fable saga, you'll have to be relaxed."
Hand gestures will form the basis as the primary controller, and will be used to control the horse which accompanies players as well as "off horse navigation" and the magic "weaving" system, which allows players to create objects and weapons in the game.
Molyneux went on to reveal that technology from the previously cancelled Project Milo is being used in Fable: The Journey, and like the cancelled project, Lionhead are wanting gamers to have an emotional connection with the characters in the game, especially with the player's trusty horse.
"This horse is one of the most amazing things we've ever created. He's going to have so much feeling for you," said Molyneux. "Think about combining the creature from Black and White, the dog from Fable and my hamster from when I was a child. I definitely want to make you cry. I want there to be a lump in your throat. I want you to remember this for the rest of your life. Why would I want to make a game that didn't do that?"
While Molyneux wasn't able to show off a detailed demo of Fable: The Journey as planned due to the "powers that be" deciding it wasn't a good idea, he did let slip that Fable: The Journey isn't the only game currently in the works, with a "super secret" second project calling the Guildford, England studio home.
Sadly, that's all that was said about this mystery game during Molyneux's talk, but with Gamescom 2011 just around the corner, we may just hear more on that soon.
Fable: The Journey is set to release sometime in 2012.
