BioWare has announced The Cerberus Network for Mass Effect 2, an in-game portal which will function as a DLC delivery system, available at launch via a single-use unlock code included with new copies of the game.
“The Cerberus Network augments and extends the rich universe of Mass Effect 2,” said BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka. “We’re thrilled to be able to reward loyal BioWare and Mass Effect fans with ongoing, high quality content and provide a direct channel for our players to dive deeper into the intriguing lore of Mass Effect.”
The developer has also teased gamers with a few details on two upcoming DLC packs, the first of which will be available on launch day for free to those with access to the Cerberus Network and will include new missions and in-game items, as well as a new character, Zaeed, a "a rugged and deadly gun-for-hire" available to join Shepard's party.
The second DLC pack will feature the Hammerhead, an agile hovertank purpose-built to traverse the rough terrain in the ME2 universe. Again this DLC will also feature new missions and unique in-game items, including Cerberus Assault Armor and the M-22 Eviscerator Shotgun. No mention on pricing though.
It's worth noting that while The Cerberus Network will be a free to those who buy the game new, gamers who pick up a second hand copy of ME2 will have to pay, a yet unnamed price, for access. We also don't know if The Cerburus Network will be the only way to get hold of future downloadable content. We'll keep you updated on BioWare's ambitious content delivery system as soon as more details are released.
