Update: It's official: Mass Effect 3 has been announced with an awesome trailer. Details over here.
It looks almost certain now that BioWare's announcement at the VGAs this weekend will indeed be Mass Effect 3. The publisher (mistakenly) listed the third and final game of the massively popular action RPG franchise on their online store, outing the game, platforms and a brief description of what the story will entail:
Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back Earth.
The listing (which has since been pulled) revealed that the game will be out on all three major platforms: PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and will retail for $59.95, or the normal RRP for AAA titles. No release date was provided.
This new information comes shortly after Joystiq reported that a "trusted source" not only confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be announced at the VGAs, but that the game will also for the first time in the series include a multiplayer component.
