Metro 2033 wasn't perfect, far from it - the combat system jumps instantly to mind. But the things it got right were truly superb. Very few games have captured that post-apocalyptic vibe like Metro 2033 did, and if you couple that with some innovative gameplay gimmicks, such as gas mask filters that need replacing every now and then, you can begin to understand why you should be a little excited regarding the sequel to this "flawed masterpiece".
Metro 2034, or as it’s more officially now known as, Metro: Last Light, will once again put you in the role of Artyom (the protagonist from the previous game) as you try and save what’s left of civilization. A civil war is raging in the ruins of Moscow and the Metro tunnels below for control of a doomsday device that might mean the end of humanity forever. The stakes doesn't get much higher than that! All this mayhem will be made possible by the 4A Engine technology which promises to deliver an epic experience filled with "extraordinary lighting, physics and destruction."
According to Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games at THQ, everything that made Metro 2033 a unique experience is set to return in the sequel.
"This game improves on the original in every way, it will have more polish, deeper and more sophisticated gameplay, and satisfyingly visceral combat, without losing what our fans loved about the original," said Bilson.
This means more exploration mixed with a healthy dose of survival horror and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry.
Keep an eye out as more information will become available after the reveal at this year’s E3. In the meantime, check out the announcement trailer below.
Metro: Last Light is set for release in 2012.
