According to DoGaming, MI Digital, the South African distributor of Microsoft Xbox consoles and games, has gone into liquidation:
Xbox 360 in SA have confirmed that MiD's Holding Company went into liquidation this morning. Xbox in SA is currently looking for a transition solution but can assure retailers and consumers that this situation will not interrupt the supply of Xbox 360 consoles and games to the market. As soon as we have confirmed the way forward we will inform the media.
MI Digital has come under increasing fire of late with many consumers complaining of poor turnarounds on Xbox 360 replacements and repairs. This has been further agitated by a lack of information regarding contact number changes, and confusion surrounding a new company, Powercare, which seems to have taken over some or all of the repair and replacement duties from MI Digital. How the two are connected, however, is still unclear.
The closure of MI Digital may come as a relief to many Xbox owners, however, it may also send a warning to other companies that the operation is not a financially viable one.
We've requested further details from Microsoft SA on exactly what is happening with distribution in South Africa and how consumers will be affected over the next few months.
[UPDATE] Microsoft SA has since confirmed with XG that MiD has indeed closed, and a new company, Powercare, has taken over warranty duties.
