Just before this years E3 kicked off in Los Angeles last week, Joystiq put together a Bingo card with their predictions for the big events of the show. You'll recall we had a look at their list and decided to add a few of our own. Now, E3 2010 has come and gone, so we thought we'd take a look at our predictions in hindsight and see how we did...
Joystiq guesses we ticked:
- Timed exclusives: Not only was this one right on the money, but Microsoft opened their press event with news of timed exclusives for all upcoming Call of Duty DLC over the next three years.
- Limbo to headline Summer of Arcade 2010: Limbo was indeed included in this years line-up, and while there was no specific headliner, this black and white platformer is definitely one of the most intruiging titles on show.
- Additional video services: While we didn't see YouTube or Hulu, Microsoft did announce the addition of ESPN for Xbox LIVE, with something like 3500 sport events available on demand in one year for the yanks.
- Natal-focused bundles: Ok, so they weren't announced at E3, but reports since the event have confirmed that we will see Xbox 360 & Kinect bundles at some point.
- Demo's of Milo, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gears of War 3 & Fable 3 (with Kinect support): Well, we were half right here. Gears of War 3 and CoD: Black Ops both made a solid showing, but there was sadly no sign of Milo, and Lionhead kept any planned Kinect support for Fable 3 tightly under wraps.
- New Xbox LIVE feautres, including expanded friends lists and clan support: No mention of either of these. You'll have to give some of your less important friends the chop to make space for new ones. At least for the moment.
- RARE's new wares: Recently rebranded RARE revealed Kinect Sports, saying that this motion-controlled title will be the developers focus for "at least" the remainder of 2010.
- PrimeTIme to return with an improved schedule: While it may not have happened at E3, be sure it is going to happen. Hopefully this time we'll be able to take home the prizes in South Africa too!
Our additions to the list:
- Joy Ride announced as a Natal (Kinect) title: We were spot on with this one, with Joy Ride set to feature all kinds of "you are the controller" shenanigans.
- Natal-enabled dashboard: Right again, with both gesture and voice control shown during the event. Saying "Xbox, play music" loads up a track in the Zune application. That's so sci-fi, you've got to love that.
- Castlevania: Harmony of Dispair revealed: Indeed! Koji Igarashi's latest was announced as a multiplayer Xbox LIVE Arcade action-adventure title for up to six players.
- Worldwide Xbox LIVE service announced (with restrictions): Nailed it. This was possibly one of the biggest announcements to come out of E3 for South African gamers, and even though there will be limitations, it's awesome news all the same.
Our wishlist:
- Xbox 360 'Slim' announced: This one was leaked just before the event itself, but it was still big news. With a sleek new shape, integrated wireless and better cooling among other things, this new look for the veteran console is a breath of fresh air.
- Xbox LIVE price drop: Not at E3, no, but Microsoft has since announced a new Xbox LIVE Gold Family plan for $99 to get the wife and kids in on the action. We'll also hopefully see further cuts as we approach the holiday season.
- Shadow Complex 2 revealed: Sadly, no. You could pick up the original (and brilliant) Shadow Complex for just 560MSP for the duration of the E3 event, but that's not quite as exciting as the revelation of a sequel.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta announced: You can file this one under "It may not have happened at E3, but that doesn't mean it's not going to happen". Because it most probably will.
So that's another E3 done and dusted. As we've come to expect from the event, the tone has been set for the rest of the year, and we can start looking forward to seeing whether those "big announcements" were everything we'd hoped for.
