With technology evolving as quickly as it does nowadays, you might be expecting a brand spanking new Xbox 360, or would that be an Xbox 720, arriving in retail stores fairly soon. The first Xbox was only around for 4 years, so why not take advantage of new technologies and bring out an ever better gaming console. But according to David Hufford, senior director of Xbox product management, Microsoft believe "there is no need to launch a new console", with at least a couple of years left in the Xbox 360's lifespan.
I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal. The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don't even know if we're at the midpoint yet.
With Microsoft expecting to have millions of Project Natal's in consumers' homes by end of this year, it's clear that they have a lot of faith in the longevity of their current gaming powerhouse. If you consider that the Xbox 360 has been around for about 5 years, and we assume we are at least very near its lifecycle midpoint, that puts Microsoft's estimate at somewhere around 2015 for a new console.
Our estimate here at XG? Let's be bold and say we put it down for Christmas 2012, or shortly thereafter.
