One of the most powerful aspects of today's technology is that much of it can be tweaked over time, ironing out bugs and streamlining processes long after launch. Such is the situation with the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor, which according to Microsoft, has been getting gradually more accurate since launch thanks to "very deliberate and planned and programmed" continual updates.
"I think like we showed at E3, like Kudo showed with Kinect Fun Labs – a lot of that tech is the advancements we've made in the accuracy, the tracking... being able to show finger tracking in the sparkles demo he did," said Xbox senior product manager David Dennis in an interview with Eurogamer. "You saw too with Ubisoft's gunsmith demo [for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier] he was using his hand to fire in the firing range mode. I think that's the kind of thing we're going to continue to iterate on."
So, where to from here? Dennis has made it clear that these improvements, for both Kinect and the Xbox 360 console itself, aren't going to stop any time soon. "There are already people working on things for next year and the year after inside our secret bunkers, and we'll continue to bring amazing stuff that consumers love."
These proposed improvements, along with the innovation hinted at by the new Kinect Fun Labs gadgets, point to a bright future for Microsoft's beloved motion control tech.
