In an interview on NPR's Talk of the Nation, the director of Incubation for Xbox, Alex Kipman, says that Kinect functionality for XNA is something the company will support "in the future".
Since its launch earlier this month, the modding community has gone to town with the Xbox 360's motion controller, turning up all sorts of interesting projects. One guy even hooked it up to a Roomba, instantly transforming a humble cleaning droid into a seeing / hearing / sentient Terminator. Kinda.
Having realised there's really nothing much at all they can do about it, Microsoft has gone from threatening Kinect modders with planetary exile to embracing them. Talking to the NY Times, Xbox LIVE senior director Craig Davidson said that, "Anytime there is engagement and excitement around our technology, we see that as a good thing. It’s naïve to think that any new technology that comes out won’t have a group that tinkers with it."
While most the major publishers out there are moving forward with a host of Kinect games, it's the small indie developers with the big ideas that will help unlock the full potential of what the device can achieve. The sooner the tools become available to all developers, and in an official capacity, the better.
