This really is the age of the franchise reboot. It seems everywhere you look there is a publisher looking to rekindle waning love for an aging franchise by taking the game back to its roots. This years Mortal Kombat was a shining example of this trend, and has proven to be quite a lucrative move for Warner Bros. Interactive, as the publisher has revealed that Mortal Kombat 2011 has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

"We are very pleased with the success of Mortal Kombat, as it surpassed our expectations in becoming the #1 fighting game  in North America released so far this year," said, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment President Martin Tremblay. "NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals."

Not only was Mortal Kombat the biggest selling fighter of the year, but also the best selling title in the history of the franchise. In comparison, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was listed as having sold 1.9 million copies according to Midway Games Form 10-K (although that doesn't indicate actual sales to date).

"All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance," said Ed Boon, NetherRealm Studios Creative Director. "Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it."

Rather impressive sales for a franchise now bordering on its twenty year anniversary.
