New Xbox 360 'Slim' officially unveiled [Update]

Xbox 360 'Slim'

Update: Microsoft SA has confirmed that the new Xbox 360 will retail for the same price as the Xbox 360 Elite - which is R3,200. Unfortunately, no local release date has been announced, but we suspect it will be sometime in July.

Original Story: Everybody was expecting it, of course, but Microsoft has officially yanked the covers from the new Xbox 360, somewhat conspicuously not called an "Xbox 360 Slim", probably because it's not really that much slimmer.

It is still, however, smaller, quieter, shinier, blacker, and wireless...lier, with built-in IEEE 802.11n wi-fi - as well as a 250 GB HDD. And, somewhat incredibly, it's shipping out at the same price as current Elite models. From the press release:

Microsoft also surprised the world with a new Xbox 360 console designed for the future. Back in black, the new Xbox 360 is sleek, silent and sexy. Connect in seconds to the always- expanding world of Xbox LIVE through built-in Wi-Fi N and store twice as many games and entertainment on a 250GB hard drive.

The newly designed console is whisper-quiet, so the silent tension of a game or movie is never broken. The new Xbox 360 system also comes with everything you need to get started, including an Xbox 360 wireless controller, Xbox 360 headset, HDMI output, USB flash drive storage capabilities and more, and a one-year limited warranty on the console, available this week and priced at $299.99 ERP.

No word from Microsoft SA on local pricing and availability, but it's already out in the US, with it coming to the UK on 16 July for a RRP of £199.

Before Microsoft gets my money, let's talk about the lifespan of this console. Both my other Xbox consoles lasted me 11 months, thanks to the dreaded ROD! Since the motherboard in this machine has been redesigned, has it only been redesigned so that it can fit into a smaller box or has it been redesigned so that the ROD is ruled out? If I am going to spend anymore money on a Xbox machine I want to know if this machine will last me longer than 11 months?

If this is just a redesigned motherboard and was just made smaller to fit into a new, slim box but will give me the same problems, then Microsoft is gonna have a lot of disappointed customers.

If there is anyone out there that has proof that the ROD was taken care of on this motherboard, please let me know. I know that the CPU and GPU have now been combined and this minimizes heat buildup and the two smaller fans (found on the older xboxes) have been replaced with a bigger one. However, I need more convincing. I need to know that this machine is not going to go all red-eyed on me. Otherwise there is no point buying a sexy, shiny, slim machine that is going to end up a paperweight in 11 months.

Well, no one knows whether the new Xbox 360 will be prone to crippling errors such as those seen on older Xbox 360s. But I haven't heard of many issues since the Jasper, and Microsoft has had plenty of case studies to help improve fault tolerance going forward.

Personally, I don't forsee any issues cropping up with the new Xbox 360s, but as mentioned before, we'll only know for sure in a couple of months.

They took care of the RROD, because the unit can't produce any red LED light from the ring anymore ;)

@Steven

Thanks for your input dude. I appreciate it. Do you perhaps know when this machine will be released? Im in South Africa. I read on another website that the 360 Slim has been launched in America. If this is accurate, when will it reach foreign shores? It's cool if you do not know. Just thought I'd ask.

It's definitely coming to SA. I spoke to Microsoft SA last week about it, and it will be releasing at the same price as the current Elite, at R3400. There's currently no launch date though, but I suspect it will be in July sometime.

I have had my xbox 360 for 4 years now and have never had a RROD. Just put the xbox in an open space where its air vents have enough space to 'breathe' i.e. not in a cabinet or confined space.

@Rush

Thanks, bro. I had this beautiful cupboard with a little shelf underneath where I used to store the Xbox. It wasn't closed up, but the cupboard was in the corner of the room and the space the shelf offered was kind of smalll, and because there are Parkade floors in this place, it collected a lot of dust. I tried my best to keep this unit dust-free, as for the rest of the room but I knew that the unit would not last in those conditions. Well, both my xboxes were stored on this shelf. I still live in the same place with the Parkade flooring... I'm not sure what to do now. I don't want to get the Xbox slim if this I am going to experience the same problem. It sucks, man.

I have had an xbox console since the original xbox, through the 360 and 360 elite. I only ever experienced one problem with one console in all that time...Considering I travelled through 11 countries with my 360, it served me well. Oh, and when I did have a problem, Microsoft did a door exchange as well as extend the warranty...I can only say positive things about my experience with my Xbox consoles. Thanks for the experiences all you hard working game developers, console designers and creative people.....I just buy the box, the game and a TV....and the rest as they say my friends..is AYOBA!
