The critically acclaimed and criminally underrated Enslaved: Odyssey to the West will not be getting a sequel; at least not in the immediate future. This (not-surprising) revelation, made by Tameen Antoniades, Ninja Theory studio co-founder, came during an interview in the latest issue of EDGE, in which Antoniades places the blame squarely on the game’s poor sales performance (730,000 copies sold as of May 2011).
"Enslaved should have done better," said Antoniades, "right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time."
"[But] because that didn't happen we've not expanded to two teams like we intended to. So we've remained a smaller shop. But now we get another chance with DMC."
If you haven't been keeping up with the latest gaming news, Team Ninja are currently working on a new Devil May Cry game, which publisher Namco Bandai Games says will redefine the franchise.
Maybe this is all for the best though. Without giving away any spoilers, Enslaved ended in such a way that a sequel would have felt forced and unnatural. If you missed out on the adventures of Monkey in Enslaved, then perhaps you should check out our review from last year, and think about picking up a copy from your local gaming store.
