Amongst the numerous game developers out there, a select few are able to bring the gaming community to a complete standstill with a game announcement and subsequent release of their latest offerings. Blizzard is one such company, Valve another, but probably the mac-daddy of all of these is id Software. Bringing about many a shift in what is the perceived current industry standard in gaming genres, and gaming engines, it’s no surprise that many have been holding their breath these last couple of months, counting down to the release of their latest first-person offering, RAGE. Well, it’s finally here, but was it worth the wait? We have a look at some early reviews to find out:
- Eurogamer: "This certainly isn't a video game like the ones we're used to playing in 2011, smothered in celebrity voice actors and shoulder-grabbingly intense expository cut-scenes, and varnished by psychologists so we never look in the wrong direction when we're sprinting away from a set-piece. Instead it's something simpler and more old-fashioned." – 8/10
- Gamespot: "A rich and rewarding adventure that sets a new visual standard for the postapocalyptic wasteland." – 8/10
- IGN: "The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage’s shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game’s characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable." 8.5/10
- Joystiq: "RAGE is pretty at times, but it's not enough to paint over the truth - that Id's labor feels like a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized." – 3/5
- 1UP: "I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011." – B
- Metacritic: 84/100
Seems like RAGE is a solid shooter, suffering more from an excess of hype and the ridiculously high bar set by id Software itself rather than any serious issues.
RAGE will be ending your world 7 October.
