Metal Gear Solid: Rising is no more, but from the ashes, like a majestic katana wielding cyborg, rises Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Yes, only the Japanese can mash up Revenge and Vengeance and get away with it.
Details on the official site reveal that Revengeance will now only be produced by Kojimna Productions, whereas development duties have been passed on to Platinum Games, the same studio who created the absolutely bonkers but brilliant Bayonetta and Vanquish.
The story has also seen some changes. Where Rising was originally to be a spin-off set between Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots focusing on the actions of the cyborg, Raiden, Revengeance has been set years after the events of MGS 4, albeit still with Raiden as the main protagonist, apparently to give the new developer some space to fully explore the possibilities of their contribution to the series without creating any paradoxes in the series. In this future, Raiden has been hired by some Private Military and Security Companies in a developing country trying to piece itself together which of course means he has to fight a lot of cyborgs.
The gameplay itself will also enjoy some re-imaging, with Platinum doing away with a lot of the sneak elements in favour of elaborate sword fighting.
Love it or hate it, the new trailer (below) is definitely worth checking out. MGR: Revengeance is set for launch sometime during 2012.
