Update: Well, the rumour was half right. It's actually a keyboard peripheral: First Rock Band 3 details revealed
Original Story: According to an ars technica mole, the keyboard icon alluded to in a recent Rock Band 3 teaser is not for the plain or garden variety keyboard, but an 80s-inspired keytar peripheral.
Those unfortunate enough to remember the music from the 80s should recall the big shoulder pads, the teased hair, and those guitar-shaped keyboards that musicians had slung around their necks. Remember? Well, that's what is supposedly in store for the next installment in the Rock Band franchise.
EA and Mad Catz have also apparently struck a deal which sees the more than capable peripheral manufacturer taking care of all the instruments for Rock Band 3, with EA focusing only on the game itself. The agreement would allow for various instruments to be bundled in different configurations, so you'll be able to get the game with just the peripherals you need.
In the way of features, it is said that Rock Band 3 will include a 'pro' mode which will require proper technique, meaning you could actually learn a thing or two about playing a real instrument, adding speculation that Mad Catz could be creating peripherals which more closely resemble the real deal to make this possible.
Expect some clarity on this rock 'n' roll madness soon enough.
