Canadian developer United Front Games' True Crime: Hong Kong, which died a sudden death a year ago when Activision decided it wouldn't stand up against the competition, has been resurrected as Sleeping Dogs by new publisher Square Enix, and is headed to consoles later this year.
"From the moment you pick up the controller and experience the blend of driving, close combat and shooting you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special," said Square Enix London Studios GM, Lee Singleton. "Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there – it’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it."
With one of "the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems" for the on-foot action, and considering United Front Games' experience with driving games - these are the guys behind ModNation racers - Sleeping Dogs might be able to prove Activision wrong after all when it arrives in stores in the second half of 2012.
For now, check out the live-action announcement trailer below for a taste of things to come.
