Runic Games' Torchlight was a delightful dungeon crawler, one that we really enjoyed when it hit the Xbox LIVE Arcade earlier this year, so gamers were understandably buoyant when the developer announced a sequel set for release before the end of the year. But, as it turns out, that will not to be the case, as Runic has revealed that Torchlight 2 is being held back until next year to get the sequel "up to the quality and polish level" that they want to achieve.
"The first Torchlight was released in record time, but it had plenty of issues that a little more development could have resolved," said Runic Games president Travis Baldree on the official Torchlight 2 site. "We didn't have the resources at the time to give Torchlight that treatment. Right at this moment though, we do have those resources for the sequel, and we feel strongly that we should apply them to make this the best game we can make and hopefully one that you'll enjoy and continue to want to play in the future. We've probably had 18 months of full development time on it so far - not excessively long yet, as far as that goes. The amount of time we need to take it the rest of the way is relatively small."
While it's disappointing that we wont get our hands on Torchlight 2 before next year, the extra time spent in development will probably be worth it in the long run, and will hopefully give Runic Games time to sort out the size problem which apparently is posing a problem for the XBLA version.
