Spike TV's 2010 Video Game Awards took place over the weekend, and I'll happily admit that it wasn't half bad. Don't get me wrong, it was still pretty awful, but there were some enjoyable moments to be had that made the whole thing bearable, namely José González's performance of Far Away, the violinist playing Tip of the Spear from Halo: Reach, some decent use of the "augmented reality" setup, and the "In Memoriam" sketch performed by the host, Neil Patrick Harris. The low points nearly all came from the poor scripting that left many of the celebrities nervously smiling at the awkward silence (sorry Rachel Bilson), and while the whole "augmented reality" get up was pretty cool, it was over done at times.
Of course, while it's great to see who won what popularity contest award, the main reason everyone tunes in is for the game reveals and announcements, and this year the VGAs didn't disappoint, with some unsurprising (but nevertheless awesome) announcements, such as Mass Effect 3 and Prototype 2, to the more surprising reveals of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Forza Motorsport 4.
