Xbox LIVE coming to South Africa in November

Print
Xbox LIVE South Africa

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Xbox LIVE will finally be rolling out to all countries where the Xbox 360 is sold "by December 2010". And now thanks to an interview over on El33tOnline with Product Manager for Xbox Live EMEA Robin Burrowes, we know that Xbox LIVE will be available in South Africa as early as November.

The exact release date is still to be confirmed, but Xbox LIVE will launch with the "core gaming and community features", such as matchmaking, friends list, Achievements, Gamerscore, a tailored Games Marketplace, and more, with other services such as Twitter and Facebook to be launched at a later date.

Not much longer then, bring on November!

The ONLY feature that we are missing in SA is the ability to buy Access/Point in Rands! (Any idea on the costs anyway?)

Why on earth would I convert my account to SA if I am going to loose all the other features of a US or UK account?

I think for many the big thing is being able to access downloadable content which was previously region blocked.

Oh, and you can currently buy MS Points and Xbox LIVE subs in Rands - http://www.mspoints.co.za/ ;)

Hmm... yeah... all or nothing I'm afraid... Don't give us table scraps and make us pay the same amount as other countries with full service... I already have all of those things... last.fm would be nice though...

I agree somewhat. If you think about it, currently we can't access many of things like Zune Marketplace or Netflix even with our fake UK/US accounts, so not having that isn't really a loss. In any case, it's expensive and slow downloading HD movies through Xbox LIVE to SA, and it's best just to go rent it from the local video shop. The only decent app is last.fm, but there's a lot of licensing issues surrounding it, so don't get your hopes up.

The only apps we won't have access to that we did before (from my understanding) will be Facebook and Twitter. But honestly, who actually uses that on their Xbox?

I think as long as we have access to all the standard features on Xbox LIVE (matchmaking, friends lists, etc.), as well as the full marketplace (without any delayed content), I'll be happy to move over to a SA account. Oh, and of course region migration is an absolute must.
