Xbox LIVE South Africa service rollout imminent? [Update]

Xbox LIVE South Africa

Update 2: It looks like Dingle was just misinformed, unfortunately. But rumours still persist that Xbox LIVE could be launched locally before year end.

Update: Simon Dingle, Tech journalist for Fin24 and Finweek, and host of (tech)5 on 5FM, has tweeted that an update is going on behind the scenes at Xbox LIVE tonight, hinting that it may in-fact be for the implementation of a local Xbox LIVE service.

There is a significant update being made to Xbox Live tonight. I wonder if we aren't going to wake up to a local service... hope springs.

XG isn't aware of any official updates going out tonight so it's a wonder how Dingle came across this information, let alone whether its accurate or not, but there's no denying that it's quite the coincidence.

Original Story: The Microsoft TechDays conference is currently happening out in Sandton somewhere, and while it's mostly a bunch of dull, corporate IT junk nobody cares about, this dropped out of it via someone's Twitter:

Microsoft SA CIO recons XBOX Live will be in South Africa, "very soon"...

Microsoft SA CIO recon? Is that like Ghost Recon? Oh, I'm hilarious. But perhaps more interestingly, Microsoft South Africa has just retweeted it, lending some possible credibility to it. Of course, Microsoft SA has been using that line for a while now, so it remains to be seen if this actually turns out to be anything worth getting excited about.

Well, we still battle with region blocking, which could solved with Xbox LIVE being officially supported locally. It would also mean a huge, and welcomed, influx of local gamers as it will be easier to sign on.

Also, what about all of us that have foreign accounts already.
Would the Money grabbing MS give us a way to switch the account to local, or force us to create new accounts/gamertags.

I foresee the later :(

Region blocking is a problem, forgot about that and more players the better I suppose.

But still after 5 years ? (Rhetorical question)

What is this. Xbox sucks anyways. I have a ps3, so much better. I am gay and everyone on Xbox live keep calling me derogatory names. I don't think its cool. I hate all you Xbox (L)users.
