The once dormant XCOM franchise is being revived in a big way this year. While we've all been following the development of 2K Marin's FPS take on the XCOM universe, publisher 2K Games has now revealed a second project - bringing "deep strategy and intense tactical combat" back to the XCOM brand in XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
A return to the franchises original strategy roots, XCOM: Enemy Unknown puts the player in the role of an XCOM commander who, through strategic planning, resource management, tech advancements and other strategy standards, needs to defend against alien invasion.
"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Firaxis Games president Steve Martin (no, not that Steve Martin). "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is currently scheduled for a Spring 2012 release.
