Too Human hands-on

Too Human has been receiving a lot of attention and it's been all good so far, I decided a quick hands on would help me see whether this title lives up to it. Lets start with the story line. You are Baldur, a cybernetic god that is charged with defending hunmanity. Unfortunately, humans can't seem to stay out of trouble and have somehow pissed off a race of war machines that are bent on eradicating human life. So off you go to help them out. The Too Human world is a modern take on the classical Norse mythology with all the usual gods and myths coming through. You don't need to have any background knowledge on this mythology, but it does make it a more familiar affair if you do. Onto the gameplay...

The first thing you will notice is the control system. Instead of using the right analogue stick for the camera view, this controls the direction of attack. Although in theory the control system makes sense, it made the initial 20min very frustrating. Silicon Knights have said the camera is very intuitive and will not effect the gameplay, however, at times it didn't feel that way. At one point I spawned looking up at the ceiling and all my attempts at trying to move the camera down failed until I got killed. Hopefully this is a bug that will be fixed at a later stage. I must admit, my second attempt after a day or two was a bit more fruitful and I had a better grasp and understanding of the control system (in other words, I realised there was just no way to control the camera myself; reseting the camera foreword doesn't count), and I started to enjoy myself.

Controls aside, the visuals are good and the story line is there. It also makes a good mix between action/adventure and RPG, but leans towards the RPG side of things with focus on leveling up your character rather than actual combat (with no control of the camera, there's no need to aim higher or lower and is more a select target and hit trigger button / hack & slash). The co-op mode is a definite plus for me and will extend the life of the game and the target audience.

Too Human is entertaining (at times) and has quite a few good points going for it, but the control system caused much concern for me, and at the end of the day the game didn't wow me. I will hold out on giving my final thoughts on Too Human until the full version is out, but I don't think this is the RPG all Xbox 360 fans have been waiting for. In my opinion this game will lose its appeal quickly for the casual gamer and only the more patient (hardcore) RPG fans will carry the torch.
