Fable 3 Traitor's Keep Quest Pack DLC

Fable 3 has been out for around five months now, but unlike with Fable 2, there hasn't been much in the way of downloadable add-ons. Sure, we've had the Understone Quest Pack, which added a few new quests, but at the end of the day it was nothing more than a short distraction. There were a few other "add-ons", such as new hairstyles, dog breeds and outfits, but ultimately they fall into the "useless junk" category. So there hasn't been DLC to truly expand the game... at least, until now.

The Fable 3 Traitor's Keep DLC brings with it new quests, three new areas to explore, more books and outfits to find, as well as a demon door to unlock. There's also the obligatory 10 new Achievements, as well as a new dog breed that turns your pet, Fluffy, into a robot dog. A fair amount of content to get stuck into then.

The story - and yes, there is a story - kicks off directly after the main game has ended. You are the ruler of Albion and during one boring day in the throne room, a mysterious character attempts to assassinate you, prompting you to travel to the Ravenscar prison to investigate. The story is delivered using plenty of in-game cinematics and various diaries and books which act as audio logs, all coming together to bring an engaging and intriguing story to life. There's a few twists and turns thrown in to keep you on your toes, and the ending is particularly noteworthy.

As you make your way through the story, you'll come across new areas to explore, which, while not particularly large in size, are well made and unique. There are also a few mysteries to uncover and some new enemies to keep you company, including new "bosses", although none of them are particularly challenging.

It isn't all sunshine and roses, however. Once you have completed the quests, the new areas aren't really replayable as most of the enemies do not return once you have killed them off. There are also no new weapons in this DLC, which is a shame. At least you get some fresh enemies to help you complete those pesky weapon tasks.

Another problem is that Traitor's Keep brings with it new game bugs. Strangely it seems to affect the Understone DLC the most. I encountered a pretty nasty problem when I went back to Reaver's Mansion to replay the Wheel of Misfortune. When I activated the wheel I got locked in the room, unable to exit. Luckily I quit to the dashboard immediately and when I reloaded my save I was outside. Browsing the official Fable 3 forums, this bug seems to be a common and possible game breaking problem, so be careful. In-game achievement counters are also a bit problematic. Hopefully a patch will be out soon to fix these issues.

Overall, though, the Traitor's Keep Quest Pack delivers enough content, backed by a suitably interesting story, to make this a true add-on for Fable fans. The main story should keep you busy for around 2 hours and the side quests and book collection another 2, so at only 560MSP, Fable fans won't find a better excuse to head back to Albion.

Pros:

  • New areas and enemies
  • New quests and story

Cons:

  • More bugs
  • No new weapons
